Superhero Poses

Mommy wanted you to do some “cheesecake shots” for your birth announcements (probably coming after the holidays). These are the result of some of them. However, it was too cold  to go the full Monty, so we did the Viking thing instead; warmly tucked in the blanket.

Uncle Olly’s visit

My friend Kris Olson stops by to see Cam.

Today you had your first non-family visitor, even though we call him “Uncle Olly.” He’s the namesake of your sock monkey (which was his gift to you) and it was HIS birthday today, so it was pretty special that he came to see you.

Uncle Olly’s real name is Kris Olson and he’s been a friend of mine for 15 years (at this writing). I was in a few of his movies and someday, when you’re older, you’ll get to see them.

Uncle Olly was pretty amazed at you, as are we all.

Shape of Smiles to come

A real smile?
You smiled on command. It was... weird.

So, funny story… tonight on the television, after you ate, the Grammy Awards were being discussed. When the name “Slim Shady” was spoken, you broke into a little gas grin. I found that funny… so I said it to you again. “Slim Shady” and… another grin. Surely, you couldn’t have a humor response as a ten day old, I thought.

And yet, tonight on mommy’s chest, as you were being soothed from a grumpy diaper change I broke out the Shady again and what do you know? You smiled.

First bath

bath time
Your very first bath

Tonight mommy gave you your first official “bath”, but nothing quite as dramatic as dunking you in a pail of water.

It consisted mostly of sponging you off in your ridiculously large towel and you didn’t seem to mind it all that much. You spent much of your time trying to nibble the hood of your towel; always the scrapper, always hungry.

After being clean, we dressed you in your “Grandpa’s All-Star” shirt. I always am afraid that if someone sees you in that when you’re with me they’ll think I am the grandpa!

Mommy did  a great job and now you’re clean for the rest of the week. Or, until you poop yourself silly…

Pediatrics

Today was your first pediatric appointment. While we didn’t exactly pick out your doctor, you had two very nice ones to look in on you; an osteopathic doctor to check out your growth and a pediatrician to give you the once over and to look at a blocked tear duct (we think) or maybe just a little eye infection.

You gained an ounce since we brought you home. Not much, but any gain is good.

Your reflexes were good, your color was great and the pediatrician called you “a little peanut”, which we took to as a medical appraisal of your general cuteness.

A reason to give thanks

Campbell's first minutes
Get ready world... Campbell is here!

It was earlier than we expected, but was perfectly timed. Campbell Boyd Heird – born at 6:39 am after mommy’s labor was induced the previous afternoon.

A low glucose level and small birth weight (5 lbs, 3 oz) meant you needed to be monitored for a bit in the NICU at Advocate Illinois Masonic hospital. You also had a touch of jaundice (as many babies do), so they bathed you in a blue light until you were fully done. As I told mommy, they had to sweeten you up a bit more before we could take you home.

And home you came, on Thanksgiving.

Your grandma’s, uncles, half-brothers & well wishers can come here and follow your exploits.

We are looking forward to them all.
