Mommy called your daddy this week to tell her about something you did and she couldn’t stop laughing. Daddy told her not to encourage you, but came home to find you in this state:

It's good for my skin, right?
It’s good for my skin, right?

You also got a message from your Mimi this week thanking you for her Valentine’s Day card. Here’s her message and her picture:

Hi Campbell, we wanted you to know how much we loved your card and how excited we were to see you had signed it. It was great to see that you wrote a C and an A and an M. You are amazing and we love you sooooooo much. We have your card on our living room coffee table so we can see it all day long. Thank you! Your card helps us remember your love and your beautiful face. Mimi and Doc

Look. You're famous!

Hopefully, they think of your beautiful face without all the avocado on it.

The Holidaze

In from the cold, we begin our holidays!
In from the cold, we begin our holidays!

We had a fun time shopping for the family, even though it was a little late in the season. You had a great time until you got tired, then  you went from disinterested to asleep.

Aren't we done yet?
Aren’t we done yet?
And then... zzzzzzzzz
And then… zzzzzzzzz

The day before Christmas Eve, your oldest (half) brother Brandon and his wife, Maureen, came to stay with us. Brandon almost felt invisible because you kept saying “Maureen, Maureen, Maureen!”

Sister-in-Law & Oldest Brother
Sister-in-Law & Oldest Brother

For our Christmas Eve lunch we took Maureen and Brandon to Galactic Pizza (one of your favorite foods), where you had your first experience with 3D glasses. (We’re not really sure you got the concept)

I CAN SEE THE FUTURE!
I CAN SEE THE FUTURE!

You also showed Brandon a thing or two about using the remote and controlling the TV (a skill you learned from Daddy).

No, No, Brandon! History Channel is HERE.
No, No, Brandon! Cartoon Network is HERE.

That night we called your OTHER (half) brother, your sister-in-law Ashley and your (older than you) nephew, Ben, on the Xbox.

The wonders of technology.
The wonders of technology.

On Christmas morning you got to open a LOT of presents. Some of your favorites include a very noisy cement mixing truck, a plushy Monster Bowling set, a Learn Piano with Elmo book, a Jake and the pirates bath toy (which you got a little early and played with every night since), a new Leap Top “computer”, and even though you haven’t played it yet, a Wii version of Wheel of Fortune.

So many presents they overflowed to the radiator

Other excitement of the holiday included building Gingerbread men virtually and nibbling on a Starbucks Snowman cookie.

Gingerbread you say? And I can't eat it? MAKES... NO... SENSE.
Gingerbread Man you say?
Sad Cookie wants to be eaten!

You’re other accomplishments:

  • You showed me the difference in “lounging” and “relaxing” on your big chair (Laying across it vs. sitting on it).
  • Conveyed your confidence over choosing the right letters on your alphabet blocks by saying “CORRECT” before we have the chance.
  • You’re very vocal about when you want to sleep (“Nigh Night”) or when you’re hungry (“Eat! Eat, please!).
  • The go to answer for “What do you want to eat?” is now Tofurky Pizza.
  • You’ve started requesting things like, “Pee Pee Potty Time” followed immediately with “NO Pee Pee Potty Time” (toddler contrariness).
  • You have had some stellar meltdowns; and yes, some that we couldn’t pinpoint the cause. We’re all working through it.  😉
This would be lounging vs. relaxing.

A Chicago Holiday

Image

We spent the last day of November and the first days of December on a little Chicago getaway. We had fun playing Tic Tac Toe while we waited for the plane. You did really well on the airplane, even though when we first got on, you were mildly panicked.

Image

Our first night in Chicago was Friday and we were picked up at the airport by our old friend, Nick Hahn. We checked into the Hotel Sax where you made a new friend, Mr. Murphy, who helped us with our luggage. For the rest of the trip, every time we approached the hotel you’d exclaim, “Mistah Moiphy elevatah!”. You loved your free run of the room and the remote was your favorite thing to run off with.

Image
Image

We took Nick and his family (his wife Justine, and daughters  Quinn and Teagan) to eat at the Chicago Diner where we were joined by Jeremiah Lobdell, Daddy’s former intern. You LOVED the food at Chicago Diner and ate everything on your plate.

Image
ImageImage

On Saturday we looked at the Christmas windows at Macy’s on State Street. We walked through Millenium Park, then we went to the Art Institute of Chicago, where you stomped around on the open deck at the Modern Wing and marveled at the art. It might have been Mommy’s favorite place we went.

ImageImageImageImage

We later met up with Igor Davila (aka Uncle Iggy) and Daddy’s old co-worker, Lisa Barlow. We later met up with Igor’s girlfriend Juliana and spent a little time at the Christkindlmarkt.

ImageImage

That Sunday we took the South Shore Line to see your Grandma & Grandpa Yeoman. They drove us to a restaurant in Valparaiso, IN called the Industrial Revolution where we celebrated your GREAT grandmother’s 93rd birthday. You had a pretty good time, because the restaurant had a train that circled above us. Before we left you saw Grandma’s Christmas lights in her yard. Later that night, we returned to Chicago and you were fascinated by the frost your breath made on the train window.

ImageImageImageImage

On Monday we had an AWESOME day at the Navy Pier Children’s Museum. There was SO much for you to do. We started with the Cardboard exhibit where you colored on nearly everything, you thrilled at knocking things over and went crazy over the spinning wheel that was in the room.

ImageImageImage

Next you had a blast pushing buttons and playing with the fire engine buttons at the Chicago Fire Safety exhibit.

ImageImage

From there we went to a water room where you painted with water, splashed like crazy and helped Mommy get Daddy wet!

ImageImageImageImage

Our next adventures took us to a room filled with tiny things where you enjoyed pulling out the drawers, an oversized garden where you got to be a butterfly, digging for dinosaur bones, shopping at a miniature store, and frolicking in a Northwoods style trail where you had a great time dropping whiffle balls down a track.

ImageImageImage

Later we walked through Navy Pier and bought some of that famous Garrett’s popcorn. At lunch, you did something we never saw you do before; fell asleep while you were eating! But it was a good nap, and after, we got our Santa pictures and you got to yell, “Hello Elf!” to his helper.

Image

Later that night we went to Chicago Diner again and met our friend, Paul Ripa who you delighted with your vocabulary and ability to high five.

Image

On Tuesday we spent the day at the Lincoln Park Zoo. But before we went we walked up Michigan Avenue and visited the Mac Store, the Disney Store and The Lego Store in Water Tower Place (Your favorite? The Mac Store).

ImageImageImage

While we missed the Zoo Lights exhibit from the weekend, but there were still plenty of things to see and do. Youeven tried to “comfy, cozy” one of the huge lighting displays (but to be fair it was a teddy bear). And you really loved the freedom to run around in a zoo that was mostly empty because of the time of day we went.

ImageImageImageImageImage

We went to Pizza Due with Jeremiah, where we introduced you to deep dish Chicago pizza. Clearly, a favorite, since you ate almost a whole piece by yourself. You also solidified your friendship with Jeremiah. We walked down to the Chicago River and the Tribune building and Jeremiah took a great picture of the three of us.

ImageImageImage

Finally, on that Wednesday before we left, we spent some time with our friend Kris and his mother, Cheryl. They had lunch with us at Frontera Grill, a famous Chicago restaurant.

Image

A busy week but a good one.

New things:

  • When asked your favorite DJ – “Dee Jay Dead Maaaussss!”  (Blame Daddy)
  • When asked your favorite music – “Bach”
  • You do a pretty good rendition of Jingle Bells
  • You’ve started making up songs and carry a pretty good tune for a two year old.
  • You recognize nearly EVERY brand the first time we tell it to you: The new ones are Einstein Bagels, Kare 11, Costco, Old Navy, Kirkland, Macy’s (“Red Star Macy’s!”)
  • You know where YOUR personal ornament is on the Christmas tree
  • You combine two words that you know don’t go together, then gleefully decree, “MAKE NO SENSE!”
  • You have a wicked sense of humor and laugh at things on TV (sometimes even when it’s not very appropriate, for instance this week it was flood victims)
  • And tonight you told your first fib: Mommy asked where the crayon marks on her desk came from you said, “Doc”. When she asked where all the crumbs came from, you said, “Elmo” just as convincing as you please.

Hard to believe

Image

Yesterday, November 20th 2012, you turned TWO!

It just seems like yesterday that Daddy started this blog for you, but here it is, your second birthday.

The weekend before your birthday we asked you where you’d like to go. You said “LEGO STOAH! (Lego store)” and “BU BUH FLY! (Blue Butterfly)!” which we thought meant, Mall of America. You did love the Lego Store and since it was not your first time, you knew which section had the Duplos. You picked out the Alphabet set and then off we headed to the “blue butterfly” which was in the Rainforest Cafe. Before you came along, mommy and I avoided the Rainforest Cafe, but you had such a good time, we will probably go again. We sat next to the large fish tank and you spent MOST of your dinner staring up into it. You ate nearly all of the kids’ pizza, amazing us both.

Image

On your birthday, we went out to eat at GiGi’s (your favorite local cafe) for dinner. You had one of your all time favorite things there (the fruit cup) and helped Mommy finish her hushpuppy fritters. You continue to be hilarious and charming. This time by letting the restaurant know your favorite show is “WHE AUF FOSHUN!” (Wheel of Fortune).

We returned home and called Mimi and Doc who sang Happy Birthday to you on FaceTime. Then you gingerly picked at half a lemon curd and raspberry cupcake… until you got your first sugary mouthful of it. THEN the birthday fun was on.

In addition to your Lego set (and big red storage box in the shape of a giant lego), Mommy got you a Campbell sized comfy chair and pillow to sit with us and watch cartoons. Or more likely, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune…

Your new words since Daddy came back from London:

  • AIMIA (Where daddy works)
  • London
  • Jeopardy
  • “Mommy Category! Daddy Category!”
  • “Wheel of Fortune”
  • “Letters”
  • “Numbers”
  • “Daily Double,,, (followed by a word)”
  • …and when the word is silly “Makes! NO! SENSE!”

And you can count to five unassisted for the most part, ten if prompted and 20 if you do it along with mommy.

You now seem to understand “en français” when mommy wants you to say something in French.

Wolf Pack

Blast! Not a real cookie…

The summer is fading and so we all went on a little vacation to the Wisconsin Dells. Mommy found the perfect place: The Great Wolf Lodge. It had just the right touch of Northwoods, animated animals and toddler friendly waterpark attractions. Apparently you were swept up in the spirit of the place, since you now can imitate a wolf (with a tiny “oooohahhwwrr”) and distinctly told Mommy “HooToot”  for the owl sound when she read you Rokko tonight.

Yes, yes. I know… hand before the door.

Daddy’s not fond of heights (or anything remotely dangerous, actually) so staying on the fourth floor with a path overlooking the lobby didn’t make him terribly comfortable. But you did a really nice job of hanging on to our hands when we had to go to the elevator. Once there, at your eye level, we were always greeted with a dusty old badger, which you seemed to like.  You also constantly told us the elevator was going “UP!” no matter which direction we were heading.

Our dusty buddy…

The first night we were there we went to story time and you only lasted as long as the clock show (an animated adventure with a talking owl, squirrel, beaver, turtle, little native girl and a settler boy from Joliet). You got so squirmy we decided to just finish stories in the room, but you weren’t too thrilled about sleeping in a borrowed, uncomfortable crib in a strange place.

You say I’ll be bored with this later? I don’t believe it!

The waterpark was probably your favorite part. We suited you up in swim trunks and a rash guard (a shirt worn to keep surfers from getting board rash), then bundled you in a lifejacket, since some of the pools were too deep for little guys. While it was loud and water came at us from every angle, you seemed to embrace it, sitting in the toddler pool and splashing like mad, chasing squirting streams and rushing face first into what Mommy called “the baby car wash”. You also got to do some time in the bigger pools with us. Daddy even took you in the outside pool where you swam with him under a waterfall.

BETTER THAN BATHTIME!
Wait, no! THIS IS BETTER THAN BATH TIME!
Ok, excuse me while I open my mouth for this one.
Swim class is so “two weeks ago”!
Geronimo, as they say

I fear no deep pool (with this thing on).

Our second night there your oldest (half) brother Brandon and his wife Maureen came to have dinner with us. You got some wolf ears which Mommy had more fun with than you did. After you went to sleep, Daddy, Brandon and Maureen went to play “MagiQuest”; a interactive scavenger hunt with a wand and fantasy theme.  The next morning, you and Daddy got up and used the MagiQuest wand to make all sorts of things in the lobby talk.  Mommy was at the spa enjoying HER vacation with a new haircut, so you and Daddy got more pool time. While in the wave pool, you had a blast while Daddy held you up like a cork above the waves and you learned yet another new word: “bob”.

What are you looking at? A wolf doesn’t use a fork.
Nice try mom. You’re not scaring anyone.

You also got along very well with the mascots we saw. You saw Wiley in the lobby several times and then you saw both him AND Violet while we ate breakfast.

Yes, yes, Wiley… you can take a picture with ME.
These toast sticks are gonna’ ruin my figure.

And it must have been a great vacation because your sense of humor was on overdrive. You bundled up in towels one night for photos, you sniffed your own feet when Daddy told you they were stinky, and you just wouldn’t stop howling when you saw wolf pictures throughout the resort. You also started combining some pretty funny words that don’t really go together like “Elmo Coke”and “Whole Coke”.

I bring the cuteness!
I dunno. I think it smells like flowers.

Today, our last day there, we spent walking around the main (and very tacky) street of the Downtown Dells. We took a diversion for a bit and walked the path along the river. You seemed to have a great time pointing out trees, boats and the water. Mommy even got you to say river (which sounded very close to “Rivah”). We ate at Monk’s Pub which had one of the best black bean burgers we ever had. On the ride home, you squirmed and fussed a bit, but entertained us with your new Leap Pad by singing your version of the ABC song which pretty much goes “Ay, Bee, DEEEE! Ay Bee DEEEEEE!”.

And made from beans, you say? Brilliant.
Nothing tacky about nature!
STILL fresh!

We’re… going… home now… right?

Next weekend, Ren Faire (if we can handle it).

Milestones of a Different Feather

My Spidey sense is tingling!

Tonight, just moments after taking this picture, you were witness to your first robbery! A pack of young kids snatched a cell phone from the table two tables behind us. Daddy was seconds from taking the picture of the kids right before it happened, but thought better and had just tucked his phone in his front pocket. No one was hurt and the Minneapolis Police rounded up the boys and got the phone back. So all’s well that ends well, as they say.

We went for a walk up and down Nicolette Mall after and you charmed the heck out of a bunch of wildly wigged girls (we assumed were from a bachelorette party). They coo’d and swooned as you did your best “Moo, Baa, La La” to them.

The second unheard of milestone came tonight just before bath. Mommy bought you a potty this week (even though daddy suggested it was far too early). You thought the word was funny and said it often. “Pah-dee, pah-dee, pah-dee!” And you realized that potty means going to the bathroom. So just before bath we sat you on it, daddy asked, “Can you go potty?” and without hesitation, grinning  broadly, you pee’d. We were both stunned and pleased and let you know about it.  And you realized you’d done a really good thing. So perhaps there will be diapers out of our lives sooner than we think.

Other words this weekend that you’ve added to your vocabulary:  Money & Teeth.

Visitors Make Me Cuter

Your grandpa and grandma Yeoman are visting you this week and today you went with them to Minnehaha Falls where you had your FIRST “bike” ride. Actually, it was a pedal surrey; you rode on the front basket part and got to wear a helmet.

You can’t catch ME ridin’ dirty!

While your grandparents are here, you turned up the cute, evidence by these pictures of you as a hipster and apparently, Frank Sinatra.

Soy Milk Cocktail, anyone?
Who want’s a piece of da’ cute?

Proud to be here.

We walked around Loring Park today during Pride Fest. It was very colorful, so we thought you’d enjoy it, but the heat made it less fun that it should have been. You went through an entire container of bunny crackers, so we didn’t linger.

Preparing for the journey

You DID have fun playing in one of the sandlot play yards and you even chased a stranger for his balloon.

Balloon!! Balloon!!
YAY! PLAYGROUND!!
Warm sand? Let’s investigate…

After you were a little tired out, we took you to Common Roots cafe and shared a fruit plate with you. You simply love pineapple and could probably eat a whole one if we let you. And you enjoyed the Melissa & Doug puzzle they had there. (We just bought you a similar one on Saturday)

Pineapples are awesome.
No, the chicken does not say “Moo”!

Approaching 19 Months

How we START every fun event…

We had a fun weekend, despite daddy getting a little sick. You visited the Science Museum of Minnesota and were probably the most delighted at the huge, snarling polar bear next to the lockers where we put your diaper bag. We spent most of our time near the dinosaur bones and your favorite thing was not the exhibits but the puzzles you found.

While the museum is pretty extensive, most of the exhibits were for older kids or adults, so you became bored fairly quickly. Bunny crackers helped get you over the energy lull and then we went outside where you played with a (leaky) bucket of water.

Is that Perry’s mother? Raaawr!
I see my future and it’s upside down.
So, should we run?
Yum. Bunnies are delicious.
Puzzling over dinosaurs
Hey, where’s the water going?

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The previous weekend we went to the Minnesota Arboretum, where we walked through a forest, let you play with plants and even discovered a HUGE snapping turtle (which daddy almost stepped on, thinking it was a rock).  We also drove the three mile trail where you shouted one of your new words (“EPIC”, which sounds more like “eppa”) everytime we saw a new group of trees or shrubs. It had to be epic, since you’re big enough to face FORWARD in the car.  Later, we stopped at an Applebee’s where you had a great time with crayons and could say another of your favorite words (“Apple”, which doesn’t sound as much like Epic as you’d think), because there were apples everywhere.

Facing forwards is EPIC!
What’s that???
The mega-turtle!
Knock, Knock.
Let me fix this for you…

Rambling Guys

Several times this month mommy has had things to do and daddy took you out for fun. We went to the MOA Aquarium, the Walker Library, Dunn Brothers coffee (where you had apple juice) and today we took mommy to Wild Rumpus Kids’ Bookstore where you got two new books.

Fish... fish... SHARRRRK!
Yes, computers at the library are as fun as the ones at home.
MY JUICE, pal!
Chickens? Ferrets? Books? What is this place!?
