Summertime Round up

Here it is, the summer of 2015. From pre-school graduations, to train museums, to birthday parties, rainy day drawings to outdoor fun, aquarium visits, Spy museums; we’ve done quite a bit this summer.

Mom, seriously? Save it for bedtime.
Mom, seriously? Save it for bedtime.

We were very excited that you would participate in this year’s graduation ceremony, since you were PAINFULLY shy in your Thanksgiving pageant. You did participate a little, but were more engaged when it was time to leave.

Haaaaaaaaay! I'm graduating.

After graduation, mom and dad took you to the Columbia Mall where you revealed a newfound interest (though mild); you wanted a Captain America shield. You have told us a few times this summer that he was your favorite super hero, even though you still like wearing all your Batman shirts. Your real superpower? Stealing dad’s spot in bed and maximizing your space on the bed…

Oh yeah, I'm the new Capn' America.

There were two major birthday parties; our next door neighbor Garret and your down the street buddy, Rohan. At Garret’s you proved your mastery of the slide. At Rohans, your love of an open sprinkler…

Speaking of open sprinklers, we got a blow up pool which had a couple of good days of use. Though the water gets so cold, you nearly freezed the first time we ever played around in it.

One of the drawings you did on a rainy day is going to remain a classic in this household. Daddy and his boss have a saying at work that you captured quite perfectly in a drawing. Ask me someday and I’ll explain it to you. You also haven’t slowed down with your general hijinks. But you have become a great helper in the grocery store!

Some of the mundane stuff that still provided us with laughter? Your haircuts with Tessie. “When your hair gets messy, go see Tessie” is the new rhyme in our house. You adore your stylist and for that, we’re thankful.

A BIG milestone was your FIRST movie theater experience. You were perfect. You sat quietly, laughed at all the right parts and after it was over, revealed that your favorite character was… the villain. But in MINIONS, even the villains are pretty funny and tame.

Later in the summer Daddy’s old friend from New Orleans came to visit (Scott Smith; though he and his family live in North Carolina now). The Smith family visited our house, had brunch with us in DC and we walked them all over the place.

The day we visited the B&O Train Museum in Baltimore was an extra special day because you got to see the trains from Chuggington! It didn’t stop there though, because we went aboard a big steam engine, did a lot of activities and visited a very large and interesting roundhouse.

Some of the things we DIDN’T get on film were two different summer camp experiences you had. Both with Lifetime Athletic. But on a field trip day, Daddy decided to pull you out and go to the National Aquarium with you (more on that below).

Your obsession for game shows hasn’t really subsided, but you’ve at least provided us with some entertaining versions. You’ve scribed the Russian version of Jeopardy (or is it Wheel of Fortune?) in Cyrillic. And you were so fixated on a Mickey Mouse episode where Donald got “flipperboobootosis” that you actually made a puzzle board with the category “Sores on the Feet”.

The National Aquarium visits were both great. First dad took you on a day off. You and he went from tank to tank, learning about fish and you started a journal. You did pretty good work in it too, writing down names and trying to draw the animals we saw. The second time, was the whole family and it was a nice distraction on a very hot day.

This weekend we went peach picking and went to the park, where you were SO adroit on all the equipment. Daddy nearly had a heart attack when you went zipping up the rock wall, but it’s good that you’re building your muscles and your confidence.

Other things of note:

  • We are reading EPIC! (A book app) a few times a week. You’ve completed the 100 books challenge for the summer and aren’t slowing down!
  • You also like an app called Disney Appisodes, which let you control the book.
  • Based on Appisodes, you now watch Sheriff Callie, Miles from Tomorrowland and Chuggington as regularly as the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
  • Your game show fixation has gotten a little intense sometimes, but Wheel of Fortunes have given way to category boards and puzzle boards.
  • You told Daddy that you were going to “Take over Merkle… as the CEO. Of the cafe…”
  • When we go to Arundel Mills mall two things we have to do; Dave and Buster’s Arcade, Bass Pro Shop’s massive fish tank.
  • We’ve played a lot of Legos, board games (Mostly Hi Ho Cherry Oh) and have to figure out some toys to DONATE because you have so many.
  • We all spent the night at Colin and Beth’s again.

Of Mice and Magic

This installation is about your FIRST trip to Disneyworld!

Just you wait. THIS is an epic Campbelltime.
Just you wait. THIS is an epic Campbelltime.

We took a vacation this week and boy, was it a big one! We flew to Disneyworld to spend three days playing around in Downtown Disney and two of the parks.

Our flight was on Delta (your favorite airline) and you weren’t disappointed when the flight attendant gave you extra mini-pretzels. Once we landed, we were off to Port Orleans Riverside on the Magic Express. Our room was pretty far away from everything, so we got our exercise going to a from the restaurant, pool and busses.

— DAY ONE —

On the very first hour of our first day you ran and skinned your knee. Fortunately, it didn’t bother you for more than about 10 seconds. You were up and running again after a nice concierge gave us a band-aid with some neosporin. We tried to take a dip in the pool, but for some reason you weren’t terribly fond of it (Not to say you were afraid, but after about ten minutes you clung to Daddy and repeatedly said, “All done”).

Mommy wanted to see the Disney Boardwalk, so we decided to start there. It was so hot, we decided maybe that was a bad idea. We ate at the ESPN restaurant and later, you got a little ice cream scoop. That made it better. You also wore a floppy hat that Daddy got for you in the gift shop, so you weren’t roasting.

Wait a minute. These leaves are REAL.
Wait a minute. These leaves are REAL.

We decided that a day walking around Downtown Disney might be more fun and we were right. When we arrived, you stomped around on a fountain that narrowly drenched you at every step. Then we went to a place that lets you make your own t-shirt. You got one that Daddy put together; a skull and crossbones with the phrase, “Adorable, but still dangerous”.  We bounced from shop to shop. You were particularly fond of T-Rex cafe (didn’t eat there, but did get a dinosaur), the Lego store and you f0und butterflies at the Rainforest Cafe. Most importantly we got you the classic set of Mouskateer Ears with your name on the back.

OH. Water! Let's see if I can get wet.

Just so you’re properly warned.

After a short meltdown before your nap, we took a boat ride back home to let you cool off a bit. It was a good idea, because when you woke up we went back to Downtown Disney and ate at Raglan Road. There were Irish dancers there and you turned on your “Campbell charm” and got to join them for a jig. Not that you danced much, but you did make an impression.

Are you into younger men?
So, em, are you into younger men?

Later, we learned about Hidden Mickeys (Mickey faces tucked away in some less than obvious places). Mommy found one on the shelf and YOU found one in the drawer pulls that looked like keys. Your keen eye continues to astound us.

— DAY TWO —

The next day, it was off to the Magic Kingdom where you got to wear your new floppy hat and use your Disney Magicband (you loved it all day long). We got there very early, since Mommy and Daddy heard we could enter the park an hour ahead of non-resorts guests. However, that information was wrong so we had to wait in front of the hot gates. You were a little antsy, but once we got in we went straight for Adventureland where we boarded the Jungle Cruise. From that moment on it was a BLUR.

What's next?

Uh... I'm a friend, Mr. Elephant.

We rode the Aladdin’s Flying Carpet (probably your favorite ride of the day), went to the Tiki Room (where you weren’t very impressed), walked through the pirates area, but Pirates of the Caribbean was closed. So Mommy went for a ride on Splash Mountain while you and Daddy went to Brer Rabbit’s house.

RIDE MOMMY RIDE

After that we went to see Ariel in the new Little Mermaid’s “Under the Sea Adventure”.  It was such a mellow ride, we made our way to “Storybook Circus” to swoosh around in a plane with Goofy. This was your very FIRST roller coaster and while you screamed a little on the first hill, you seemed to be enjoying it with a wide grin (later however, you told us it scared you just a little bit). Once around Storybook Circus, it was back to the Haunted Mansion which didn’t seem to bother you at all.

Finally, it was time for LUNCH! We had a great Italian meal at Tony’s (the restaurant where Lady met the Tramp). Almost immediately you were ready to go, go, go. So went we did to Tomorrowland. You were all adrenaline when we got to Buzz Lightyear’s “Space Rangers”. Buttons, aliens, buzzing noises and a huge prop sketch tool kept you completely engaged. You loved the ability to control the spin of our car. We needed a little break after all that action, so we took a breather on the People Mover. Even though we thought it was low key, you had a blast as we toured Tomorrowland from above. Just after that we got a laugh with Mike Wazowski on the “Laugh Floor”, where you started to get a little tired.

We worked our way back to Adventureland where you took a nap and Daddy watched a show with Jack Sparrow. Mommy took a well earned rest too. Since we hadn’t really seen Frontierland, we leisurely strolled around while you napped and ended up back in Fantasyland. When you awoke, we had a quick snack near Gaston’s Tavern (a new part of Fantasyland) and tried to queue up for Dumbo. Sadly, rain clouds were bearing down, so it closed. That seemed like a great time to see “It’s A Small World” and you enjoyed the shapes and slow pace of the boat ride, since you were still just sort of getting back into the groove.

Who you callin' dumb?
Who you callin’ dumb?

The rain came down hard and made it difficult for us to do much more, so we scooted over to Pooh’s ride. You had a great time in line, since you could play with beehives, smash screens that looked like honey and you laughed at how Pooh spelled it (HUNNY). The rain didn’t stop. It got worse and worse, so we skittered back to Tomorrowland which had better cover. We also tried to have a quick veggie burger, but the restaurant was so packed people were sitting on the floor.

Mommy and I had a clever plan. We ran back across to Buzz Lightyear to dry off a little and you got to push buttons again. As we rode it a second time, your new found power of cart spinning was in high gear. You almost made us all dizzy.

Finally there was a break in the rain and we had that veggie burger, but the stormclouds made it difficult to ride some of the things we’d planned. It was such a full day, we headed back to the resort wet and tired but thoroughly entertained.

— DAY THREE —

So this was the day we thought would be mostly for Mommy (she’d never been to Epcot before either). What a surprise when we found there was SO MUCH for you to do. We started by having a leisurely breakfast, as going early did us no good the previous day. You and Mommy had Mickey waffles which you gobbled up with glee. And we boarded the bus at a more reasonable hour with a less pushy crowd. Good thing, because when we got there, most of the guests had poured into the park. Within moments, we were in line for Spaceship Earth and on the ride in five minutes. The mixture of animatronics and color kept you engrossed, so we knew it was going to be a pretty good day.

Mickey Waffles, FTW!
Mickey Waffles, FTW!

The ride changed QUITE a bit since Daddy last saw it, and when you descended from time and space, the screens in front of you asked what sort of world you wanted to live in (Mommy answered for you both). Once we made all our selections, it showed YOUR faces on people in the future. Surprisingly, when we got OFF the ride, there you were on the globe in the main area! It was filled with futuristic games and you almost didn’t want to leave.

TOP OF THE WORLD, MA!
TOP OF THE WORLD, MA!

It was a special Garden Month at Epcot, so there were topiaries galore. What made it even more fun for you was the abundance of BUTTERFLIES everywhere. We saw Goofy, Minnie, Donald and Daisy, each with some sort of butterfly. When we got close enough to “The Land” attraction, we decided to ride. Mommy loved how it talked about soil and conservation, you enjoyed the rows and rows of hydroponic plants, because you read every one to us.  You also found a couple of hidden Mickeys on this ride!

Bushes I can wrap my head around.

HIDDEN MICKEY!
HIDDEN MICKEY!

From here we made our way to “The Seas” where we saw Crush talk to all the kids (a REALLY fun event, but we think you might have been too young to enjoy it). Mommy even got called out by Crush and he called her “Blondie”. He taught us how to speak turtle (Duuuuuuuude)and talked to us about other creatures of the sea.

Good timing, since we went to eat lunch early at the Coral Reef, which provided us a full wall sized view of an aquarium, We even saw a HUGE sea turtle as we ate. They prepared an AMAZING quinoa dish especially for your vegetarian need. We asked to speak to the chef (because we were so impressed) and as we complimented him, he complimented YOU on your sophisticated taste buds. You also amazed us by writing EPCOT. It was your first discernible written word.

Nice view. Can we move here?
Nice view. Can we move here?
Of course I can spell. You're surprised?
Of course I can spell. You’re surprised?

Off then to see Nemo; We followed his getting lost, him being found, then swimming with the REAL fish in the tank. Pretty amazing stuff. We spent even MORE time in the aquarium now that your interest in fish was piqued. You saw sea cows, a dolphin, manta rays, more sea turtles and a whole host of fish. We probably could have stayed there all day, but there was so much more to see.

Nemo... FOUND HIM!
Nemo… FOUND HIM!

Next was the Imagination Institute, where we rode through a demonstration of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. Of course, our ride was hijacked by a little purple dragon called Figment who changed everything. In fact, when we went to the smell chamber, he made the smell of a  skunk and he generally tricked us until the end. The ride dumped us out to the Imagineworks floor where you got to play musical instruments just by moving your hands, run around a lot, and saw tricks of light and color.

A figment of imagination?
A figment of imagination?

Once outside again, we found a butterfly tent filled with bright flowers, butterfly sculptures and of course, butterflies. It was VERY warm, so we didn’t stay there as long as you might have liked. But again, so much to see!

Did I mention... BUTTERFLIES!!!!
Did I mention… BUTTERFLIES!!!!

It was getting late in the day, so we moved on to the International Pavilions; a group of tiny “worlds” dedicated to several different countries. Mommy had also started a collection of pressed pennies earlier in the day and it swelled as we walked through these realms.

We skipped Mexico because we had a fast pass to ride the Maelstrom. It was a ride in a Viking ship from the Norwegian Pavilion. Daddy thought it would scare you, but you seemed to take the trolls, polar bears and storm through the North Sea all in stride.

Norway. Yawn. What's next?
Norway. Yawn. What’s next?

We backtracked to Mexico where we took another boat ride, albeit much calmer, guided through Mexico’s sights by the Three Caballeros. You seemed to like the bright colors of fiesta and found several wheels.

From there it was off to China, but since there was no ride, we move through quickly. We did stop long enough to buy you a Chinese lantern which now hangs in your room. The weather started to look foul, so we donned our ponchos from the previous day (we bought them at the Pooh ride) and moved on.

OVER THERE. HURRY. We're missing SOMETHING, I'm sure of it.
OVER THERE. HURRY. We’re missing SOMETHING, I’m sure of it.

Around the bend was a trading post of sorts, but we skipped it. We all paused briefly in Germany as Mommy walked through a wine store. Then continued towards Italy. Along the way we saw a really neat model train and we took the time to see it. Again though, the clouds welled up in the distance and we saw rain, so we sought shelter.

Our journey stopped for a bit in Italy, where we sat under a canopy expecting the rain that never came. You and Mommy shared an Italian ice (that you let Daddy have a little taste of and it was VERY, very good).

I'll finish this if you can't.
I’ll finish this if you can’t.

We moved past America and into Japan, where we saw an art exhibit, but you seemed pretty bored and were getting tired. It had started to rain only slightly, so we continued our trek.  Morocco was next and since we had dinner reservations there, we didn’t want to get TOO far, but the momentum was great, so we pushed on to France.

Lanterns here too?
Lanterns here too?

There, you finally fell asleep and Mommy and Daddy tried some French wine. It was very good, as was Mommy’s French accent. The fellow at the counter wasn’t sure if she was French or Canadian! (She’s neither, but her accent is just that good). Mommy did a little shopping as Daddy rested his feet, then off to the United Kingdom.

Wow. Even the weather is authentic.
Wow. Even the weather is authentic.

There, Daddy popped into the Rose and Crown for a pint, where he met a few people (Daddy does that everywhere he goes). When Mommy joined, she had a pint too and just in time. The rain came POURING down. You slept through all the noise and conversations. Finally, when there was a break in the rain, we all ran out to do some souvenir shopping. We bought a Union Flag for our basement, some uniquely British things and we practically stumbled on Christopher Robbin’s bedroom. Who was there? Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too! Just in time for your nap to end and you woke up moderately confused to be hugged by the pair.

Did I shrink in my sleep?? These stuffed animals are HUGE.
Did I shrink in my sleep?? These stuffed animals are HUGE.

We braved another small rain shower and went to Canada where we spent most of the time in the gift shop talking to the Canadian girls that worked there. Then quickly back to Morocco where we ate at the Marakech. You LOVED the restaurant. The couscous was good, the music was great and there was a belly dancer. It gave the weather JUST enough time to calm down and after dinner the night was clear and cool.

“Creeeeeepy” (a direct quote)

When we left the restaurant twilight was setting in and there were numerous flames lit around the lake.

FIRE! FIRE!
FIRE! FIRE!
Moroccan Mint? I APPROVE.
Moroccan Mint? I APPROVE.

We got a PRIME spot to watch the final lightshow for the evening and you stayed up WAY past your bedtime. But the look on your face when you saw that first big BOOM of flame and fireworks was worth it. Satisfied that we’d done everything that we could, we trudged back to the resort tired, happy and amazed by all we’d done.

And now for the BOOM.
And now for the BOOM.
Fire... works... are... awesome.

It was, all in all, an epic vacation. And of course, we’re looking for the opportunity to do it again as soon as we can afford the time.

G'night EpicCot

Things that made us laugh:

  • You called Epcot “EpicCot”.
  • When asked on your way home what your favorite ride was you said, “the BUS!”
  • We suffered BAD turbulence coming home. You gleefully decreed “It’s like the Aladin ride” and was thrilled.

Thankfully

Today was Thanksgiving and we all have a lot to be thankful for. Since you came home to live with Mommy and Daddy on this day three years ago, so much has changed! We’ve lived in three different cities across three different states, you’ve learned how to spell like a champ and you’re finally wearing UNDIES!

Undies: Helping free me up to build things...
Undies: Helping free me up to build things…

Today was really fun. You got up early and watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade with Daddy while Mommy made breakfast. Then we all played with Legos for a little bit. We had a light lunch and while you napped, Mommy and Daddy did a little more unpacking around the house.

Well, we're WATCHING it. Why wouldn't I spell it?

After you woke up and had a little snack, we played some more and you were very snuggly. You even took some pictures with Daddy’s iPad.

Not bad! Work it Dad! WORK IT!
Not bad! Work it Dad! WORK IT!

Then it was all sticky goodness as Mommy made some icing and we decorated a gingerbread house Mommy assembled while you were sleeping! You seemed to be far more interested in tasting our materials than decorating with them. But it came out just fine.

Finally, we had a Gardein roast (all vegan, for Mommy’s sake) with yummy vegetables for our Thanksgiving dinner. We had apple pie for dessert with a little bit of ice cream and you told me what you were thankful for!

Before bedtime, you and Daddy built a Lego Thanksgiving to remember the day. There was a table with food, a big TV (for watching football, though we never did) and a stove with apple pie on it (that was your idea).

The day, captured for all eternity!

Every day you remind us what we’re thankful for, Campbell!

You tried to sit in every chair,  collected pine cones,  kicked a ball with mommy and had a great time. You even went sans pants while you played with Legos because it was naturally warm in the house.

Pants free Legos = Warm Weather

Since Daddy will be in London next week, we’re going to the park tomorrow, so you’ll have a chance to stretch those quickly growing legs.

New accomplishments:

  • It’s almost gotten impossible to keep up with your new words. You can read about fifty or so sight words. And you know all of your ABCs including singing the song in the right notes.
  • You now make some pretty sophisticated jokes for your age, making puns from words and laughing about them (calling your protective “whale” cover on the faucet the “Whale of Fortune” and the diaper pail a “Diaper Peel”). However, you also think the word “poot” is funny and you try to do that on command. So we suppose it all balances out.

Songs you can’t get enough of ( & credit for who influenced you):

  • Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones (mommy)
  • Thunderstruck by AC/DC (mommy & daddy)
  • Skyfall Theme by Adele (daddy)
  • London Calling by the Clash (daddy)
  • Little Red Caboose by Buckwheat Zydeco (mommy)
  • Sufi Bhakti by Debashish Batacharya (daddy)
  • Pretty much anything by Beethoven (mommy)
  • Pretty much anything by Deadmau5 (daddy)
  • Gangnam Style & Gentleman by Psy (daddy, to mommy’s chagrin)

A Chicago Holiday

Image

We spent the last day of November and the first days of December on a little Chicago getaway. We had fun playing Tic Tac Toe while we waited for the plane. You did really well on the airplane, even though when we first got on, you were mildly panicked.

Image

Our first night in Chicago was Friday and we were picked up at the airport by our old friend, Nick Hahn. We checked into the Hotel Sax where you made a new friend, Mr. Murphy, who helped us with our luggage. For the rest of the trip, every time we approached the hotel you’d exclaim, “Mistah Moiphy elevatah!”. You loved your free run of the room and the remote was your favorite thing to run off with.

Image
Image

We took Nick and his family (his wife Justine, and daughters  Quinn and Teagan) to eat at the Chicago Diner where we were joined by Jeremiah Lobdell, Daddy’s former intern. You LOVED the food at Chicago Diner and ate everything on your plate.

Image
ImageImage

On Saturday we looked at the Christmas windows at Macy’s on State Street. We walked through Millenium Park, then we went to the Art Institute of Chicago, where you stomped around on the open deck at the Modern Wing and marveled at the art. It might have been Mommy’s favorite place we went.

ImageImageImageImage

We later met up with Igor Davila (aka Uncle Iggy) and Daddy’s old co-worker, Lisa Barlow. We later met up with Igor’s girlfriend Juliana and spent a little time at the Christkindlmarkt.

ImageImage

That Sunday we took the South Shore Line to see your Grandma & Grandpa Yeoman. They drove us to a restaurant in Valparaiso, IN called the Industrial Revolution where we celebrated your GREAT grandmother’s 93rd birthday. You had a pretty good time, because the restaurant had a train that circled above us. Before we left you saw Grandma’s Christmas lights in her yard. Later that night, we returned to Chicago and you were fascinated by the frost your breath made on the train window.

ImageImageImageImage

On Monday we had an AWESOME day at the Navy Pier Children’s Museum. There was SO much for you to do. We started with the Cardboard exhibit where you colored on nearly everything, you thrilled at knocking things over and went crazy over the spinning wheel that was in the room.

ImageImageImage

Next you had a blast pushing buttons and playing with the fire engine buttons at the Chicago Fire Safety exhibit.

From there we went to a water room where you painted with water, splashed like crazy and helped Mommy get Daddy wet!

ImageImageImageImage

Our next adventures took us to a room filled with tiny things where you enjoyed pulling out the drawers, an oversized garden where you got to be a butterfly, digging for dinosaur bones, shopping at a miniature store, and frolicking in a Northwoods style trail where you had a great time dropping whiffle balls down a track.

ImageImageImage

Later we walked through Navy Pier and bought some of that famous Garrett’s popcorn. At lunch, you did something we never saw you do before; fell asleep while you were eating! But it was a good nap, and after, we got our Santa pictures and you got to yell, “Hello Elf!” to his helper.

Image

Later that night we went to Chicago Diner again and met our friend, Paul Ripa who you delighted with your vocabulary and ability to high five.

On Tuesday we spent the day at the Lincoln Park Zoo. But before we went we walked up Michigan Avenue and visited the Mac Store, the Disney Store and The Lego Store in Water Tower Place (Your favorite? The Mac Store).

While we missed the Zoo Lights exhibit from the weekend, but there were still plenty of things to see and do. Youeven tried to “comfy, cozy” one of the huge lighting displays (but to be fair it was a teddy bear). And you really loved the freedom to run around in a zoo that was mostly empty because of the time of day we went.

We went to Pizza Due with Jeremiah, where we introduced you to deep dish Chicago pizza. Clearly, a favorite, since you ate almost a whole piece by yourself. You also solidified your friendship with Jeremiah. We walked down to the Chicago River and the Tribune building and Jeremiah took a great picture of the three of us.

Finally, on that Wednesday before we left, we spent some time with our friend Kris and his mother, Cheryl. They had lunch with us at Frontera Grill, a famous Chicago restaurant.

A busy week but a good one.

New things:

  • When asked your favorite DJ – “Dee Jay Dead Maaaussss!”  (Blame Daddy)
  • When asked your favorite music – “Bach”
  • You do a pretty good rendition of Jingle Bells
  • You’ve started making up songs and carry a pretty good tune for a two year old.
  • You recognize nearly EVERY brand the first time we tell it to you: The new ones are Einstein Bagels, Kare 11, Costco, Old Navy, Kirkland, Macy’s (“Red Star Macy’s!”)
  • You know where YOUR personal ornament is on the Christmas tree
  • You combine two words that you know don’t go together, then gleefully decree, “MAKE NO SENSE!”
  • You have a wicked sense of humor and laugh at things on TV (sometimes even when it’s not very appropriate, for instance this week it was flood victims)
  • And tonight you told your first fib: Mommy asked where the crayon marks on her desk came from you said, “Doc”. When she asked where all the crumbs came from, you said, “Elmo” just as convincing as you please.

The Weekend Before Halloween

Well, we certainly packed in the pre-Halloween activities this weekend getting the most out of our costumes. You were a raccoon, Mommy was a wolf (or perhaps, generic mommy critter) and Daddy was an Animal Control Officer.

Hey! That’s MY gig!

We started Saturday by leaving the house late for Mall of America where we THOUGHT there was going to be Trick-or-Treating like last year. However, it was only a blacklight/dance party for kids, but we still made the most of it. We walked around the mall, Daddy bought a hat for his costume, we danced a little and still had a great time. Of course we also visited your favorite place, the Lego Store! When we got home you crawled up on your big chair and let us know you wanted to read.

And this little piggy went out for Halloween…

On Sunday we scooted off (in costume again) to the Minnesota Zoo where we walked and got treats. At first you weren’t very happy, but soon you got into the spirit. We saw a skeleton under the water (a diver that was dressed up for Halloween), walked through the Minnesota exhibit where you punched buttons to make owl sounds and wolf sounds, we had lunch and you tried to wrestle a banana from Mommy (almost succeeding), then we walked all the way over to the Farm where you saw some crazy scarecrows, you played in the pumpkin garden and thrilled when seeing live chickens, pigs and rabbits. You also tired yourself out in a hay maze (probably the most fun you had all weekend).

Catch us if you can, Animal Control Officer!
Why are the fish not scared???
Who you callin’ a varmint?
The wolf says… AGAIN! AGAIN!
Banana thief!
I know this scares daddy…
Oh, I WILL find you punkin’ seed…
I’ve discovered… DIRT!
Dead end again?

We knew you were tired, because the big blanket we bought at the zoo (we forgot ours) became your cuddle buddy. As we were leaving you were beside yourself to see pumpkins again, so we let you out of the stroller to sit on every pumpkin along the way.

Ok. I surrender to the blanky.
Let me just… UMPH… em… gimme a second.
Yep. I am sittin’ on punkins again.

This past week:

  • You were watching our President on TV and you said, “OBAMA!” clear as a bell.
  • You have started asking for your “blanky” and when you get it you say, “cuffy coseeee!” for Comfy-Cozy.
  • You’ve also found a way to make noise on Mommy’s computer, even when it’s locked which delighted you (video to prove it)

Wolf Pack

Blast! Not a real cookie…

The summer is fading and so we all went on a little vacation to the Wisconsin Dells. Mommy found the perfect place: The Great Wolf Lodge. It had just the right touch of Northwoods, animated animals and toddler friendly waterpark attractions. Apparently you were swept up in the spirit of the place, since you now can imitate a wolf (with a tiny “oooohahhwwrr”) and distinctly told Mommy “HooToot”  for the owl sound when she read you Rokko tonight.

Yes, yes. I know… hand before the door.

Daddy’s not fond of heights (or anything remotely dangerous, actually) so staying on the fourth floor with a path overlooking the lobby didn’t make him terribly comfortable. But you did a really nice job of hanging on to our hands when we had to go to the elevator. Once there, at your eye level, we were always greeted with a dusty old badger, which you seemed to like.  You also constantly told us the elevator was going “UP!” no matter which direction we were heading.

Our dusty buddy…

The first night we were there we went to story time and you only lasted as long as the clock show (an animated adventure with a talking owl, squirrel, beaver, turtle, little native girl and a settler boy from Joliet). You got so squirmy we decided to just finish stories in the room, but you weren’t too thrilled about sleeping in a borrowed, uncomfortable crib in a strange place.

You say I’ll be bored with this later? I don’t believe it!

The waterpark was probably your favorite part. We suited you up in swim trunks and a rash guard (a shirt worn to keep surfers from getting board rash), then bundled you in a lifejacket, since some of the pools were too deep for little guys. While it was loud and water came at us from every angle, you seemed to embrace it, sitting in the toddler pool and splashing like mad, chasing squirting streams and rushing face first into what Mommy called “the baby car wash”. You also got to do some time in the bigger pools with us. Daddy even took you in the outside pool where you swam with him under a waterfall.

BETTER THAN BATHTIME!
Wait, no! THIS IS BETTER THAN BATH TIME!
Ok, excuse me while I open my mouth for this one.
Swim class is so “two weeks ago”!
Geronimo, as they say

I fear no deep pool (with this thing on).

Our second night there your oldest (half) brother Brandon and his wife Maureen came to have dinner with us. You got some wolf ears which Mommy had more fun with than you did. After you went to sleep, Daddy, Brandon and Maureen went to play “MagiQuest”; a interactive scavenger hunt with a wand and fantasy theme.  The next morning, you and Daddy got up and used the MagiQuest wand to make all sorts of things in the lobby talk.  Mommy was at the spa enjoying HER vacation with a new haircut, so you and Daddy got more pool time. While in the wave pool, you had a blast while Daddy held you up like a cork above the waves and you learned yet another new word: “bob”.

What are you looking at? A wolf doesn’t use a fork.
Nice try mom. You’re not scaring anyone.

You also got along very well with the mascots we saw. You saw Wiley in the lobby several times and then you saw both him AND Violet while we ate breakfast.

Yes, yes, Wiley… you can take a picture with ME.
These toast sticks are gonna’ ruin my figure.

And it must have been a great vacation because your sense of humor was on overdrive. You bundled up in towels one night for photos, you sniffed your own feet when Daddy told you they were stinky, and you just wouldn’t stop howling when you saw wolf pictures throughout the resort. You also started combining some pretty funny words that don’t really go together like “Elmo Coke”and “Whole Coke”.

I bring the cuteness!
I dunno. I think it smells like flowers.

Today, our last day there, we spent walking around the main (and very tacky) street of the Downtown Dells. We took a diversion for a bit and walked the path along the river. You seemed to have a great time pointing out trees, boats and the water. Mommy even got you to say river (which sounded very close to “Rivah”). We ate at Monk’s Pub which had one of the best black bean burgers we ever had. On the ride home, you squirmed and fussed a bit, but entertained us with your new Leap Pad by singing your version of the ABC song which pretty much goes “Ay, Bee, DEEEE! Ay Bee DEEEEEE!”.

And made from beans, you say? Brilliant.
Nothing tacky about nature!
STILL fresh!

We’re… going… home now… right?

Next weekend, Ren Faire (if we can handle it).

Boo at the Zoo

Today we took you for a little pre-Halloween action to the Como Zoo where they were doing a charity event call “Zoo Boo”, tailored to little guys and girls. Mommy didn’t dress up, but you and I went as “Parrot and Pirate”. You got lots of compliments

You had a good time, despite being a little chilly. While you can’t eat the candy, you’ve given mommy some treats for the rest of the week. Tomorrow night we brave the crowds at Mall of America. (But at least you’ll be warm!)

Our little art critic

Today we went to Art-a-Whirl, an opening of several galleries in Northeast Minneapolis. You were very well behaved and more importantly VERY engaged with the art. Here are some of your critical faces (as well as a chill moment outside the galleries).

At one point we asked you if you liked a piece of eclectic artwork and you exclaimed quite loudly (and seriously enough to make us laugh), “Uhmmm”.

Later, we took you to the Old Spaghetti Factory and mommy got treated to her favorite pasta. It’s also the day we bought baby food (peas) to see how you like it tomorrow.

Rock and Rolla’

Yes, Campbell, you do like your music. But while you’re sporting these cool jammies given to you by “Uncle Iggy” (aka our friend Igor Davila), you usually listen to things that are more reserved; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Classical tunes on Pandora, that sort of thing…

In any case, you ROCKED these pajamas this weekend.

Campbell giving it his all
Holla!
Campbell, post sneeze, with a most adorable face.
